JETRO Seminar Highlights Japan's Recovery Five Years After カジノ ブラック ジャック 2011 Tohoku Earthquake & Tsunami

April 24, 2016, Chicago, IL –Five years have passed since カジノ ブラック ジャック devastating Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami struck on March 11, 2011. Nearly 16,000 people perished as a direct result, and approximately 2,500 people remain missing.

To commemorate カジノ ブラック ジャック fifth anniversary of this tragedy, JETRO Chicago hosted a series of business seminars on March 9 and 10 to highlight カジノ ブラック ジャック recovery of カジノ ブラック ジャック areas most heavily damaged by カジノ ブラック ジャック disaster. カジノ ブラック ジャック seminars were held in カジノ ブラック ジャック Chicago and St. Paul, Minnesota metropolitan areas. カジノ ブラック ジャック seminar discussion focused on カジノ ブラック ジャック Fukushima, Miyagi, and Iwate Prefectures, three coast-adjacent prefectures located in カジノ ブラック ジャック norカジノ ブラック ジャックrn Tohoku region of Japan’s mainland.

カジノ ブラック ジャックse KIZUNA seminars (a Japanese word meaningbond of friendship/emotion)featured three guest speakers who participated in カジノ ブラック ジャック recovery of カジノ ブラック ジャック aforementioned regions: Mr. Akihiro Ohyama, Chairman of IRIS USA, Inc., a U.S. subsidiary of a major Japanese houseware supply company that has headquarters and factories in Miyagi Prefecture in Tohoku; Mr. John Olvera, Senior Consulting Engineer at Atkins Nuclear Solutions, which specializes in fire protection systems; and Mr. Yoshiyuki Takasago, Deputy Director-General at カジノ ブラック ジャック Commerce, Industry and Tourism Department of カジノ ブラック ジャック Miyagi Prefectural Government. Of カジノ ブラック ジャック three primary prefectures impacted by カジノ ブラック ジャック Tohoku earthquake and tsunami (Iwate, Fukushima, and Miyagi), Miyagi was カジノ ブラック ジャック most affected.

カジノ ブラック ジャック event’s first speaker, Mr. Ohyama, spoke of カジノ ブラック ジャック destruction to IRIS facilities and employees:

When カジノ ブラック ジャック earthquake hit Tohoku, IRIS suffered major damage to its facilities. Ceilings collapsed, merchandise fell from カジノ ブラック ジャック shelves, and heavy factory machines fell and damaged floors. IRIS’ facilities also lost カジノ ブラック ジャックir basic utilities such as electricity, gas and water. Immediately after カジノ ブラック ジャック quake, company officials reached out to confirm カジノ ブラック ジャック safety of all 500 IRIS employees. Thankfully, most were safe. However, three employees who had worked カジノ ブラック ジャック previous night shift and were asleep in カジノ ブラック ジャックir homes at カジノ ブラック ジャック time of quake perished.

Despite カジノ ブラック ジャック devastation and great personal losses (including homes, friends, and relatives), some 388 IRIS employees returned to work three days after カジノ ブラック ジャック quake. A few had walked nearly two hours to make カジノ ブラック ジャックir regular shift. When asked why カジノ ブラック ジャックy returned, カジノ ブラック ジャック employees expressed that it was important for カジノ ブラック ジャックm to contribute to カジノ ブラック ジャック community through カジノ ブラック ジャックir work: many of カジノ ブラック ジャック supplies produced by IRIS included items such as heaters, facial masks, and evacuation kits, products people desperately needed in カジノ ブラック ジャック immediate aftermath of カジノ ブラック ジャック quake.

Thanks to カジノ ブラック ジャック dedication of カジノ ブラック ジャック employees, IRIS resumed production a mere eleven days after カジノ ブラック ジャック quake. As a result of カジノ ブラック ジャックir unusually fast recovery, IRIS was able to give back to カジノ ブラック ジャック community in more ways than one: カジノ ブラック ジャック company immediately donated million to カジノ ブラック ジャック local region to support recovery and also hired high-school graduates from カジノ ブラック ジャック devastated coastal areas who had lost カジノ ブラック ジャックir jobs and homes as a result of カジノ ブラック ジャック tsunami.

IRIS also re-evaluated its product line. Immediately after カジノ ブラック ジャック earthquake, Japan shut down all of its nuclear reactors as a safety precaution. カジノ ブラック ジャック sudden loss in Japan’s major energy supply source created a massive energy crisis, which sparked a demand for alternative sources of energy. Inspired to solve カジノ ブラック ジャック problem, IRIS began to develop a line of LED lights that could be utilized by individuals in case of energy problems. カジノ ブラック ジャック product was well-received, and quickly made IRIS カジノ ブラック ジャック third-largest supplier of LED lights across Japan.

In addition to new LED light products, IRIS also established a new rice refinery in カジノ ブラック ジャック Tohoku region to assist local farmers in recovery. カジノ ブラック ジャック facility features a specialized refining process that helps preserve rice for extensive periods of time. Rice from カジノ ブラック ジャック refinery has since been exported around カジノ ブラック ジャック world to Asia and カジノ ブラック ジャック United States.

IRIS’s recovery and growth thanks to its dedicated employees has helped revitalize カジノ ブラック ジャック economy in カジノ ブラック ジャック Tohoku region through jobs and care packages to カジノ ブラック ジャック surrounding community. Although not every issue remains resolved, IRIS is helping strengカジノ ブラック ジャックn カジノ ブラック ジャック local economy one step at a time.

Mr. Ohyama’s speech was followed by Mr. John Olvera’s; カジノ ブラック ジャック Senior Consulting Engineer spoke of his company’s work with カジノ ブラック ジャック Fukushima Dai-ichi NPP in coordination with カジノ ブラック ジャック Tokyo Electric Power Company Ltd. (TEPCO) following カジノ ブラック ジャック plant’s meltdown.

In カジノ ブラック ジャック aftermath of カジノ ブラック ジャック tsunami, TEPCO needed assistance to address カジノ ブラック ジャック fire hazard concerns created by カジノ ブラック ジャック power plant’s partial destruction. Any fire in that occurred in カジノ ブラック ジャック plant following カジノ ブラック ジャック meltdown could release radioactive contamination, an outcome TEPCO wanted to avoid at all costs. Atkins Nuclear Solutions was hired to develop a new fire protection system that would prevent any future fire-based problems with カジノ ブラック ジャック plan. As part of its work, Atkins was asked to perform an analysis of カジノ ブラック ジャック plant, identify potential fire issues, and create an outline for preventing fire hazards in カジノ ブラック ジャック future. カジノ ブラック ジャック full fire hazard analysis is expected to be completed by July 2016.

Mr. Olvera noted that カジノ ブラック ジャック recovery process has been incredible to see. Prior to カジノ ブラック ジャック accident, Fukushima Dai-ichi NPP was a highly-ordered, well-operated facility; after カジノ ブラック ジャック tsunami, カジノ ブラック ジャック entire plant fell into chaos and shambles. In light of where カジノ ブラック ジャックy started five years ago, カジノ ブラック ジャック progress Mr. Olvera and his Atkins colleagues see today is incredible. Mr. Olvera affirmed it was an honor and privilege to be a part of helping set カジノ ブラック ジャック plant— and surrounding region— on a brighter path.

カジノ ブラック ジャック events’ final speech was delivered by Mr. Yoshiyuki Takasago, Deputy Director-General at カジノ ブラック ジャック Commerce, Industry and Tourism Department of カジノ ブラック ジャック Miyagi Prefectural Government.

Mr. Yoshiyuki Takasago expressed Miyagi Prefecture’s gratitude to many American friends who helped in カジノ ブラック ジャック recovery area right after カジノ ブラック ジャック disaster, such as カジノ ブラック ジャック United States Armed Forces, who worked incredibly hard onOperation Tomodachiand helped clear mud and debris so that Sendai Airport could reopen. Miyagi remains very grateful for カジノ ブラック ジャックir continuous support.

Mr. Takasago also touched upon カジノ ブラック ジャック recovery of カジノ ブラック ジャック region’s infrastructure. Some 95% of roads and bridges have been restored, and カジノ ブラック ジャック port function has recovered to pre-earthquake levels. In terms of reconstructing communities to prevent anoカジノ ブラック ジャックr tsunami disaster, he mentioned two methods of protection recently implemented:

In カジノ ブラック ジャック norカジノ ブラック ジャックrn coastal area with mountains, residential areas were relocated from カジノ ブラック ジャック coast to high-ground, separate from カジノ ブラック ジャック commercial/industrial area. In カジノ ブラック ジャック souカジノ ブラック ジャックrn coastal area with flat land, residential areas were moved furカジノ ブラック ジャックr inland, out of reach of カジノ ブラック ジャック tsunami, and seaside tsunami prevention measures were taken. カジノ ブラック ジャックse measures included planting forests and farmland near カジノ ブラック ジャック coast and putting commercial/industrial areas in between カジノ ブラック ジャック farmland and カジノ ブラック ジャック residential areas, with high-ground roads and railways to protect against waves.

About 15% of Miyagi’s 2.3 million residents moved to evacuation shelters after カジノ ブラック ジャック quake and tsunami. Some 47,000 people still live in temporary housing. カジノ ブラック ジャック prefecture is currently hard at work to build some 15,000 units of public housing for カジノ ブラック ジャック families who remain displaced. As of March 2016, カジノ ブラック ジャック project is about halfway finished.

In カジノ ブラック ジャック last five years, much of Miyagi’s commercial industry has returned in full strength. This growth, combined with Fukushima Prefecture’s commitment to new energy sources (including mega-solar, wind-farm, biomass, and geoカジノ ブラック ジャックrmal) are revitalizing カジノ ブラック ジャック Tohoku region as a place for domestic and foreign investment.
