By Jeff Carpenter<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Hidden in <\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>massive amounts of data\u00a0<\/span>made possible by the Internet of Things\u00a0<\/span>are solutions\u00a0<\/span>for<\/span>\u00a0making our buildings more comfortable, energy efficient, controllable<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and operate more cost effectively. Implementing\u00a0<\/span>these solutions, however,<\/span>\u00a0comes at a significant cost<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and demands<\/span>\u00a0that every economy of scale be achieved\u00a0<\/span>to make it\u00a0<\/span>affordable.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n For this<\/span>\u00a0to happen,\u00a0<\/span>strategic technology planning needs to occur.\u00a0<\/span>Unfortunately,\u00a0<\/span>it\u2019s too late to accomplish this during\u00a0<\/span>the schematic design phase\u00a0<\/span>of\u00a0<\/span>the traditional<\/span>\u00a0A\/E process\u00a0<\/span>\u2013 when technology solutions for program needs are<\/span>\u00a0typically\u00a0<\/span>identified.\u00a0<\/span>At this point t<\/span>he project\u00a0<\/span>train has already left the station,\u00a0<\/span>and technology\u00a0<\/span>design becomes reactive<\/span>\u00a0and must<\/span>\u00a0catch up as best it can.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n To meet\u00a0<\/span>the growing<\/span>\u00a0need for\u00a0<\/span>proactive\u00a0<\/span>strategic technology thought leadership<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>IMEG is now providing\u00a0<\/span>t<\/span>echnology\u00a0<\/span>a<\/span>dvisory\u00a0<\/span>s<\/span>ervices\u00a0<\/span>outside the boundaries of traditional A\/E design<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>This fundamentally different approach\u00a0<\/span>provides guidance through<\/span>\u00a0the exponentially\u00a0<\/span>increasing\u00a0<\/span>complexities\u00a0<\/span>of\u00a0<\/span>the built-environment\u00a0<\/span>as technology\u00a0<\/span>convergence pushes us into the IoT.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The promises of IoT are vast. Systems and devices that never had connectivity before are being network-enabled, allowing them to collect, store and share data.\u00a0<\/span>How best can this serve a client<\/span>\u2019s needs<\/span>, and how can it be enabled to its fullest potential?
