The NFPA 660 will combine other resources into one document that contains relevant information for other areas of focus.<\/small><\/p>\n<p><small>Additional standards and codes relating to metals\/alloys (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfpa.org\/codes-and-standards\/all-codes-and-standards\/list-of-codes-and-standards\/detail?code=484\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">NFPA 484<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">), agricultural\/food products (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfpa.org\/codes-and-standards\/all-codes-and-standards\/list-of-codes-and-standards\/detail?code=61\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">NFPA 61<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">), wood processing\/wood working (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfpa.org\/codes-and-standards\/all-codes-and-standards\/list-of-codes-and-standards\/detail?code=664\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">NFPA 664<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">), and sulfur powders\/solids (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfpa.org\/codes-and-standards\/all-codes-and-standards\/list-of-codes-and-standards\/detail?code=655\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">NFPA 655<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">)\u00a0are\u00a0all available through the NFPA website.<\/span> <span style=\"font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/small><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/thead>\n<\/table>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A recent\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/?v=563827661252881\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">explosion at a grain elevator<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in Jefferson, Iowa, illustrates the potential severity of such accidents and the importance of dust hazard analysis (DHA) to expose the types of dust that pose a danger to processing facilities.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:2,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:300}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">DHAs can be complicated, confusing, and\u00a0invasive, but simple measures can be taken to determine if one is\u00a0even needed in the first place.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:2,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:300}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfpa.org\/codes-and-standards\/all-codes-and-standards\/list-of-codes-and-standards\/detail?code=652\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">NFPA 652-19<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0has a flow chart\u00a0\u2013\u00a0frequently used by industry\u00a0experts like those at\u00a0IMEG\u00a0\u2013\u00a0that\u00a0can\u00a0determine if your\u00a0industrial or processing\u00a0facility needs to conduct a DHA. The\u00a0essence of the\u00a0flow chart can be summarized with these questions:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:2,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:300}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Does your facility manufacture, process, blend, convey, re-package, generate, or handle dusts or particulate solids?<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0If the answer\u00a0to this question\u00a0is yes, you may be required to do a DHA.\u00a0Many dusts that cause catastrophic disasters are materials that the average person would not consider \u201chazardous\u201d or \u201cdangerous,\u201d like flour, sugar, and plastic. It is important to follow NFPA guidelines to determine if a more in-depth analysis\u00a0of your facility\u00a0is needed.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:2,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:300}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Have you determined the combustibility or explosibility hazards of the material?\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The next step in\u00a0determining\u00a0the need for a DHA is\u00a0checking to see\u00a0if the materials in your facility are\u00a0combustible\u00a0or not.\u00a0This information can sometimes be found on the\u00a0material safety data sheet (SDS)\u00a0for the material. Frequently, the SDS will simply state whether\u00a0certain\u00a0materials are\u00a0combustible\/flammable or not. If the material is listed as combustible, a DHA\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">must<\/span><\/i><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">be performed on the process handling the materials. If the material is not combustible, that information should be documented in accordance with NFPA 652 and meet the documentation requirements for the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ).<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:2,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:300}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If the combustibility information is not readily available on the\u00a0SDS, a\u00a0simple \u201cgo\/no-go\u201d\u00a0combustibility\/explosibility test needs to be performed on the material. A more in-depth analysis can be conducted if more tests are performed. These additional tests can provide\u00a0K<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">st<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, P<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">max<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, MEC (minimum explosible concentration), and MIE (minimum ignition energy). This information is helpful when sizing dust collectors for combustible dust, deflagration venting, explosion vents, and examination of other hazards including ignition from electrostatic discharge.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:2,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:300}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A DHA should <span class=\"NormalTextRun BCX9 SCXW196112015\">document what a facility is doing correctly to mitigate dust deflagration\/explosion hazards as well as what they can improve on. After that, the owner and engineer should work as a team to implement the changes needed to bring the facility into compliance<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun BCX9 SCXW196112015\">.
